I have learned to communicate with cats without raising my voice. Using body language I show them who is the boss here. Our living room has a bay window. From there I can watch them on their way to the feeding area for birds.
I knock on the window. When they see me I curl my back. My claws are out and I show my teeth. I am a monster cat defending my area.
The intruder will stop. He/she will look at me, and I will feel the doubt – but definitely not show weakness. What if the cat just ignores me? This is the crucial point, – the frozen moment when we stare into each other’s eyes. Whom of us will give in?
Till now I have been the winner. I am still the chief cat. My «guest» turns anxiously around with the tail down. He/she will slowly start the retreat, and after a few seconds the cat speeds up, and disappears like an arrow.
Actually, I really like cats. As a kid my very best friends were cats. No one could understand me like my cats when I dug my face into their soft fur. That is why I can «do the cat language».
All this for the sake of little birds. Every winter I feed them with the best I can offer, so I feel responsibility for them.
Cones on the contrary cannot be scared away. I have tried different methods, but they seem to enjoy my show, clapping their hands screaming for more… These mean little creatures just love to play around in the bird feeders.
Fortunately they do not have wings.
